２０１５年９月に株式会社フタバモデル製作所のブランドとして誕生しました。
フタバモデル製作所は５０年前木型製作会社として誕生し、その後時代とともに金型加工、検査治具製作、自動車部品試作、航空機部品試作、量産、カーボン部品試作、量産と携わる仕事とともに成長してきました。
ＭＡＤＮＥＳＳは現社長片山慎太郎が、１０年前カーボン部品の加工を頼まれたのをきっかけにカーボンの魅力にとりつかれもっと沢山の人にその魅力を伝えたいと誕生しました。

Madness, a division of Futaba Model Production., Ltd launched in September 2015. 
Futaba Model Production., Ltd was created 50 years ago as a wooden mould manufacturer. The company has grown with the times to include work involving mould machining, inspection jig production, trial and mass production of automobile parts and air craft parts as well as the trial and mass production of carbon parts. 
Madness was the brainchild of current CEO Shintaro Katayama, who on receiving an order of carbon parts 10 years ago was motivated by the charm and beauty of carbon. He endeavoured to introduce the many uses of carbon to the everyday person.
 

ＭＡＤＮＥＳＳの由来 / The origin of Madness

ＭＡＤＮＥＳＳ：直訳すると狂気の沙汰、熱狂するといった意味になります。 物づくりをしている上で、なにより職人冥利につきる言葉は「すごい」「なにこれ」「どうやって作ったの」「マジで」といった驚きの声を聞くことではないでしょうか。驚きを越えたい。驚きを越えると人は感動し心動かされるのではないでしょうか。
カーボンが美しく見えるように形状にこだわり、その裏側の美学である作り方にこだわり、カーボンその物がもつ特性、カーボンでしかできない物づくりにこだわりたい。
カーボンを初めて見る人も、見たことがある人も美しいと感じ、私たちと同じ物づくりをしている人が見てもそのスピリッツを感じ感動する商品。まさに驚きを越えた商品を作っていきたいと考えています。
ＭＡＤＮＥＳＳには物づくりに対するこだわりや感動させたいという思いが込められています。
ＭＡＤＮＥＳＳという言葉は驚きを越えた最高の褒め言葉かもしれません。

Madness literally translated means “a state of wild or chaotic activity” or “extremely foolish behaviour”. We would like to hear the following phrases from customers regarding our products: “Amazing”, “What on earth is it?” , “How did you make it?” and “Are you serious?” . Humans are deeply moved and surprised when reality exceeds their expectations.

We aim to continue to produce items and designs which bring out the beauty of carbon, while maintaining highest quality processes behind the scenes. In addition to the ongoing manufacture of standard carbon products, we continue with production of items which can be made with carbon alone. People who are seeing carbon for the first time and others who have seen it previously in different formats all marvel at the beauty of the carbon. Furthermore, craftsmen both in-house and outside of our company are impressed with the material and the feeling it gives them to once again use their skills in artistry. We endeavour to continue to make products which surprise and delight, going above and beyond customer expectations.

We put much thought into the name ‘Madness’ and hope that it translates our desire to continually surprise customers with our persistent quality delivery and commitment.
For our customers to associate the word ‘Madness’ with surprise at our products is perhaps the greatest compliment we can receive.
 

カーボンダルマについて / About Carbon Daruma

カーボンはじっと見ていると、奥行きがあり、光の当たる方向により表情を変えます。
これは曲面であればあるほど美しく、そして表面のクリアー層が厚くなるほど深みを増します。
そんなカーボンの美しさを伝えるには曲面のかたまりであるダルマが最適でした。
型にカーボンを貼る作業のことを、賦形といいますが、曲面に賦形するのはシワになり易く非常に難しいです。
ダルマの賦形はカーボンの合わせ目から放射線状に広がるようにシワの見せ方にもこだってひとつひとつ丁寧に手張りしていますので、形は同じダルマですが、カーボンの模様はそれぞれに味があります。ぜひ手にとってカーボンの美しさを感じていただければと思います。

Carbon Darumas explained

When looking closely at carbon, it becomes clear that there is great depth and variation to the material, depending on how light hits its surface. The more curved the carbon product, the more beautiful it becomes. The deeper the carbon goes, the clearer the surface layers become. A Daruma doll, which is a mass of curved surfaces is one of the best possible shapes to convey the beauty of such carbon.
The process of applying carbon to a mould is called forming, however it is very difficult to shape carbon into a curved surface as it wrinkles easily. Each Daruma doll that we make is carefully hand-formed to eliminate each wrinkle and the carbon material spreads outwardly for maximum effect. While the finished product is just one Daruma doll shape, the patterns formed over each curve of the Daruma are distinctive and original. We hope you enjoy the beauty of carbon in your hands.
 

何故漆塗りなのか / Why do you use Urushi lacquering?

カーボンにはウレタンクリア塗装をするのが一般的ですがウレタン塗装は衝撃や伸縮に弱くカーボンへの密着性が悪いです。
そこでより密着性の良い塗料を探したところ漆へたどりつきました。
本漆を取りよせ試験片に塗り曲げ試験をした結果、ウレタン塗装は粉々になりカーボンから全てはがれ落ちましたが漆はカーボンが折れてもはがれ落ちず残っていました。日本の伝統はすばらしいと感じたとともにカーボンとの相性はこれ以上の物はないと核心した瞬間でした。
ただ、漆は非常に塗るのは難しく、厚く塗るとカーボンの模様が見えなくなってしまうという問題にぶつかりました。 そんな中、飛騨高山の春慶塗り伝統工芸師阿田野一夫さんと出会いました。
春慶塗りは木目が透けて見えるのが特徴で木の温かみを感じることのできる漆です。
模様が命のカーボンダルマにとっては最高の漆でした。
滑らかにしっとりとした艶、赤紫に見えるカーボン。春慶塗りとカーボンこれもまた美しいです。

In general it is common to apply urethane clear paint to carbon products. However, urethane paint does not stand up well on impact and bending nor is its adhesion to carbon very suitable. We searched for better adhering paints and tested urethane paint against lacquer in a trial process. After application, we checked the test piece by bending it. The results showed that the urethane paint crumbled and peeled away from the carbon however the lacquer remained intact on the carbon after bending, even when the carbon itself broke. At this point we realised that the traditional use of lacquer by Japanese craftsmen is far superior in this case and there is no better match for carbon than lacquer.

The difficulty we faced however was that when the lacquer was applied thickly, the beautiful carbon patterns were no longer able to be seen. The lacquer painting process was a major problem. Around this same time we met with a Japanese traditional craftsman, Kazuo Atano who specialises in the Hida Shunkei paint technique in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture. When using the Hida Shunkei lacquering technique on wood, the natural grain of the wood shines through, celebrating the warmth of the wood beneath. As the carbon patterns on the Daruma are the essence of its beauty, this same lacquer was the best partner for it. After application, the carbon looks smooth, shiny and a reddish-purple colour. Hida Shunkei Paint and carbon are a perfect match!
