ＭＡＤＮＥＳＳ について / About us
２０１５年９月に株式会社フタバモデル製作所のブランドとして誕生しました。
フタバモデル製作所は５０年前木型製作会社として誕生し、その後時代とともに金型加工、検査治具製作、自動車部品試作、航空機部品試作、量産、カーボン部品試作、量産と携わる仕事とともに成長してきました。
ＭＡＤＮＥＳＳは現社長片山慎太郎が、１０年前カーボン部品の加工を頼まれたのをきっかけにカーボンの魅力にとりつかれもっと沢山の人にその魅力を伝えたいと誕生しました。
Madness, a division of Futaba Model Production., Ltd launched in September 2015.
Futaba Model Production., Ltd was created 50 years ago as a wooden mould manufacturer. The company has grown with the times to include work involving mould machining, inspection jig production, trial and mass production of automobile parts and air craft parts as well as the trial and mass production of carbon parts.
Madness was the brainchild of current CEO Shintaro Katayama, who on receiving an order of carbon parts 10 years ago was motivated by the charm and beauty of carbon. He endeavoured to introduce the many uses of carbon to the everyday person.

ＭＡＤＮＥＳＳ：MADNESSという言葉には、常識を超えた熱意やこだわり、限界に挑む姿勢といった意味を込めています。 物づくりをしている上で、なにより職人冥利につきる言葉は「すごい」「なにこれ」「どうやって作ったの」「マジで」といった驚きの声を聞くことではないでしょうか。驚きを越えたい。
想像を超えるモノづくりは、見る人の印象に強く残るのではないでしょうか。
カーボンが美しく見えるように形状にこだわり、その裏側の美学である作り方にこだわり、カーボンその物がもつ特性、カーボンでしかできない物づくりにこだわりたい。
カーボンを初めて見る人も、見慣れている人も、その造形美に驚き、モノづくりに関わる方々にも技術とこだわりの深さを感じ取っていただけるような製品を目指しています。

カーボンダルマについて / About Carbon Daruma
カーボンは、光の当たり方や角度によって表情を変える奥深い素材です。
曲面であればあるほどその美しさは際立ち、表面のクリア層が厚くなるほど光の屈折が生まれ、より豊かな質感が現れます。
その美しさを表現するため、私たちは「ダルマ」に注目しました。ダルマは、なだらかな曲面で構成されており、カーボンの魅力を最大限に引き出すことができる最適な形状でした。
カーボンを型に貼り込む「賦形（ふけい）」という作業は、特に曲面での加工が難しく、熟練の技術が求められます。
私たちは、放射線状にカーボンが広がるように工夫し、1体ずつ丁寧に手作業で仕上げています。同じ形のダルマでも、カーボン模様には一つひとつ個性があり、それぞれに味わいがあります。
Carbon fiber is a material of depth and subtlety, changing its appearance depending on the angle and direction of light. The more curved the surface, the more beautifully the carbon reflects light. A thicker clear layer enhances this depth, giving the surface a rich, dimensional texture.
To express that beauty, we chose the Daruma—a form composed entirely of smooth curves—as the ideal object to showcase carbon’s aesthetic potential.
The process of applying carbon to a mold, known as forming, is especially difficult on curved surfaces where wrinkling can easily occur.
Each of our Carbon Darumas is carefully hand-laid, with special attention paid to the direction and flow of the weave to minimize distortion and enhance visual balance. While the form remains consistent, each piece reveals a unique carbon pattern, resulting in a one-of-a-kind expression of material and technique.
何故漆塗りなのか / Why do you use Urushi lacquering?
カーボン製品には一般的にウレタンクリア塗装が施されますが、ウレタンは衝撃や曲げに対する耐性が低く、カーボンとの密着性にも課題があります。
より優れた密着性を持つ塗料を探す中で、私たちは「漆」という日本の伝統的な素材にたどり着きました。本漆を取り寄せ、カーボンに塗布して曲げ試験を行ったところ、ウレタン塗装は粉々になって剥がれ落ちた一方、漆はカーボンが破損しても剥がれずに残っていました。
この結果から、漆はカーボンとの非常に相性の良い塗料であると確信しました。しかし、漆は厚く塗るとカーボン模様が隠れてしまうという課題もありました。
そんなとき、私たちは飛騨高山の伝統工芸士・阿田野一夫さんと出会いました。彼の専門である「春慶塗り」は、木目を透かして見せる技法で、素材の風合いを活かす漆として知られています。この春慶塗りの技術は、模様が命ともいえるカーボンダルマに最適でした。
春慶塗りによって仕上げられたカーボンは、なめらかで上品な艶を持ち、赤紫色に輝く表情が現れます。
伝統と先端素材の融合により、またひとつ新しい表現が生まれました。
It is common practice to apply urethane clear coating to carbon fiber products. However, urethane coatings are prone to cracking and detachment when exposed to impact or bending, and they often lack sufficient adhesion to carbon surfaces.
In our search for a better alternative, we turned to urushi lacquer, a traditional Japanese coating material.
We conducted bending tests by applying both urethane and genuine urushi lacquer to carbon test pieces. While the urethane coating cracked and peeled away completely, the lacquer remained firmly adhered—even when the carbon itself broke.
This confirmed that lacquer offers exceptional adhesion and durability, making it a remarkably compatible coating for carbon fiber.
That said, lacquer presents a challenge: if applied too thickly, it obscures the carbon’s distinctive weave pattern.
At this point, we encountered Kazuo Atano, a traditional craftsman in Takayama, Gifu Prefecture, specializing in Hida Shunkei-nuri—a lacquering technique known for allowing the natural wood grain to remain visible beneath the transparent finish.
This approach was a perfect match for our Carbon Daruma, where the weave pattern is an essential part of its visual identity.
When applied using the Hida Shunkei technique, the lacquer enhances the surface with a smooth, elegant gloss. The carbon takes on a refined appearance with subtle shades of reddish purple.
Through this collaboration, we achieved a unique fusion of traditional Japanese craftsmanship and advanced carbon materials—resulting in a product that embodies both innovation and respect for time-honored techniques.
